WITH DIRECTOR SEBASTIAN SCHIPPER

A conversation with director Sebastian Schipper about his debut film ABSOLUTE GIGANTEN.

SYNOPSIS

Hamburg, three friends, one last night together...

For years they have been inseparable, the thoughtful Floyd (Frank Giering), the loud-mouthed and yet so vulnerable Ricco (Florian Lukas) and the good-natured Walter (Antoine Monot Jr.). Out of the blue, Floyd drops the bombshell: He has signed on to a cruiser and is leaving for Singapore the very next day. Only one night separates the three of them from an irrevocable farewell. A last night that should be great, something very special, big, unforgettable. So Floyd, Ricco and Walter wander through pubs, bars and clubs, chatting, dreaming and laughing, always on the lookout... for the last time together.

She makes progress. Yet the good weather doesn’t last and before long, she discovers that her parents have once more resorted to illegal means, as a way of supporting their leisurely lifestyle. As friends and hangers-on of her parents fill their new home, the chaos continually mounts. It is in this atmosphere of physical and emotional destruction, that Stevie must now take a decision.

SIEBEN WINTER IN TEHRAN (DE, 97 MIN., 2023)

WITH DIRECTOR STEFFI NIEDERZOLL

A conversation with director Steffi Niederzoll about her debut film SIEBEN WINTER IN TEHRAN.

SYNOPSIS
In the summer of 2007, an older man approaches Reyhaneh Jabbari and asks the architecture student who has a side job as an interior decorator for her help in the design of offices. During the site inspection, he tries to rape her. Reyhaneh stabs him in self-defence. She is arrested for murder and sentenced to death. Reyhaneh was to spend the next seven years in prison while her family hired lawyers and made the public aware of the case. However, in spite of the efforts of national and international politicians and human rights organisations, the Iranian judiciary continued to cite the “right of blood-revenge”. This meant that, as long as Reyhaneh did not withdraw her accusations against the man, his family could demand her death. Reyhaneh stuck to her testimony and was hanged at the age of 26.

The film premiered at the Perspective Deutsches Kino section of the 73th edition of the Berlinale Film Festival.

ANATOMIA (POLAND & FRANCE, 103 MIN, 2021)

WITH DIRECTOR OLA JANKOWSKA

A talk with polish director Ola Jankowska about her debut film ANATOMIA.

SYNOPSIS

Mika returns to Poland to meet her father who is suffering from a severe brain injury and inherent memory loss. Although they haven't seen each other for many years, upon her arrival she becomes the father's companion in perplexity -- gently guiding him through the labyrinth of his fading mind. And as she does so, she gradually sets off on a journey through her own life. Gradually, the sense of time and space start breaking: the present blends with the long bygone past and places reveal their faraway history and memories. Slowly, life and its end, too, begin to blur. Shot on digital, 35mm, VHS and thermovision cameras, incorporating archive footage. A collage-like journey through time, memory and the origins of our identity.

Ola Jankowska is a Polish-born writer and director, based in Berlin and working internationally. Her first feature fiction Anatomia (Poland, France 2021) premiered in Venice 2021 as a part of Venice Days and has since screened at festivals around the world winning several prizes. Her first feature-length documentary I Was Here (Great Britain, 2019), co-directed with Nathalie Biancheri, premiered at CPH:DOX 2019. SHORT FILM SPECIAL

WITH DIRECTOR ALEXIS LANGLOIS

A talk with French director Alexis Langlois. We show three of his short films, in the following order:

TRINKETS & DARK THOUGHTS (FR, 27min, 2016)

TERROR, SISTERS! (FR, 28min, 2019)

THE DEMONS OF DOROTHY (FR, 29min, 2021)

“If you could cut Langlois’ films in two, they would bleed glitter. A vibrant director of the new French queer cinema, Alexis Langlois makes films that are angry and alive, and insist you stand up and take notice. Reminiscent of the bold visual style and queer anarchy of filmmakers like Gregg Araki, Bertrand Mandico, video artist Ryan Trecartin, and “Filth Elder” John Waters, Langlois’s defiantly anarchic, politically militant shorts celebrate the jubilant creativity of LGBTQ+ communities. His films may focus on telling minority stories but they revel in the universality of popular culture, a shared language that Langlois is ultimately intent on queering. This love of pop culture, especially from the ’90s and ’00s, is evident in practically every frame, which is raucously saturated with references to music videos, supernatural sitcoms like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, horror films, and the totems of queer culture.” - MUBI

MAYBE TOMORROW (SWEDEN, 97 MIN, 2011)

WITH DIRECTOR MARIKEN HALLE

A conversation with director Mariken Halle about her debut film MAYBE TOMORROW.

SYNOPSIS

Mariken Halle and her small film crew began addressing people on the streets of Göteborg. How would they imagine a movie that they would want to star in? The results were far from fantastic – she encountered dismissively amused responses and boring, confused ideas. But some of the people she talked to were different. They try getting into their “life role” – and she begins to direct them.

GRITT (NORWAY, 118 MIN, 2021)

WITH DIRECTOR ITONJE SØIMER GUTTORMSEN

A conversation with director Itonje Søimer Guttormsen about her debut film GRITT. On March 10 at 8pm (Berlin time). CLICK HERE for the zoom link.

SYNOPSIS

The artist Gritt is struggling for belonging in an unwelcoming society, but then she undergoes a radicalisation process in the name of art.

PRESS

"Gritt is a commentary on the exploitative and commercial nature of the arts industry. It also questions the responsibility of collaborative creativity through Gritt’s attempt (and failure) to work creatively with a local group of asylum seekers, using their experiences (lives, vulnerabilities, traumas) to tell an ‘important’ and moving story."

- Tara Judah, Ubiquarian

"Pulsing through Itonje Søimer Guttormsen’s rousing debut is Birgitte Larsen’s tour-de-force performance, gifting us a messy yet intriguing woman artist. Critically dissecting the liberal posturing of the Scandinavian art world, Gritt reveals a deep empathy for the precarities of the creative life.

Five short films by Jan Soldat:

GELIEBT | EIN WOCHENENDE IN DEUTSCHLAND | ERWIN | WOHNHAFT ERDGESCHOSS | NULLO

We are thrilled to invite you to a talk with German director Jan Soldat about his films GELIEBT, EIN WOCHENENDE IN DEUTSCHLAND, ERWIN und WOHNAFT ERDGESCHOSS.

About is work: "At first glance, Jan Soldat is always about one thing: sex with nettles and whips, sex in uniform and chains, sex with slaves or dogs. But the harder his figures grip, the more vulnerable they appear. Jan Soldat's gaze is unsparing and yet always empathetic, revealing without ever being revealing. And with every shot, one marvels more at the maturity and circumspection with which Jan approaches his documentaries. One senses the trust that the subjects place in him and the deeply human emotions that lie behind their seemingly bizarre practices. And above all: the mischievousness with which the mostly older gentlemen go about their business. And it soon becomes clear: Jan Soldat's protagonists may be stark naked – sex is only marginally at issue in his films – it is merely the key to the abysses and beauty of human existence."

MICHAEL (D: Markus Schleinzer, DOP: Gerald Kerkletz, 96 min, DE, 2011)

We are thrilled to invite you to a talk with German director Markus Schleinzer and DOP Gerald Kerkletz about their debut film MICHAEL. The film premiered in the Official Selection of Cannes Film Festival in 2011.

Synopsis: At first glance, 35-year-old Michael seems like an ordinary employee. He doesn't talk much to his colleagues and lives alone in the Viennese suburbs, but neither his family nor his friends question that. But Michael has a secret: in his cellar he keeps ten-year-old Wolfgang prisoner. The two live a cruel daily routine: behind lowered shutters, Wolfgang is allowed upstairs from his dark cellar room for dinner, and when Michael has to go to hospital for a few days, he stocks up on bagged soups for Wolfgang. Wolfgang may still be a child, but he is no longer as weak as he once was, and so he begins to defend himself with words, and soon with deeds, against involuntary cohabitation with his tormentor.

A METAMORFOSE DOS PÁSSAROS (R: Catarina Vasconcelos, 101 min, PT, 2020)

We are thrilled to invite you to a talk with portughese director Catarina Vasconcelos about her mesmerising debut film A METAMORFOSE FOS PÁSSAROS (The metamorphosis of birds), a fictionalized documentary, shot on 16 mm exploring the director’s family history. First showing at the Encounters section of the Berlin international film festival in 2020, the film recreates scenes featuring over seven members of the Vasconcelos’ family, including the director herself.

About the film:

"Beatriz married Henrique on the day of her 21st birthday. Henrique, a naval officer, would spend long periods at sea. Ashore, Beatriz, who learned everything from the verticality of plants, took great care of the roots of their six children. The oldest son, Jacinto, my father, dreamed he could be a bird. One day, suddenly, Beatriz died. My mom didn’t die suddenly, but she too died when I was 17 years-old. On that day, me and my father met in the loss of our mothers and our relationship was no longer just that of father and daughter... In a way we were both semi-orphaned. By understanding how my father came to terms with the loss of his mother made me understand my own sense of loss better. It also brought us closer,” Catarina told Variety.

A FOST SAU N-A FOST? (R: Corneliu Porumboiu, 89 min, RO, 2006)

It is our great pleasure to invite you to an evening with award-winning Romanian director CORNELIU PORUMBOIU and Variety film critic JAY WEISSBERG!

We will have a conversation with Porumboiu about his Cannes-winning feature film debut, “12:08 East of Bucharest”, and as a special treat, we are very happy to welcome JAY WEISSBERG for a short introduction to the Romanian New Wave and Porumboiu’s contribution to it.

About the film:

Six years after the 1989 Revolution, a local television station in Bucharest invites several guests to share their moments of glory, as they stormed the city hall chanting “Down with Ceausescu!” during the revolutionary events. An alcoholic history teacher and a lonely retiree are forced to answer questions from dubious viewers.

“Porumboiu found here an extremely deft way to make an impossibly grand statement without getting the least bit heavy about it. Not heavy until the end. This thing is dry-ass funny wisdom until the culminating karate chop to the throats of its three stooges. And us. We are made to choke on our laughter. All laughter, since forever: to laugh from inside the nightmare of history because no nightmare is all nightmare.”

DENE WOS GUET GEIT (R: Cyril Schäublin, 71 Min, CH, 2017)

Einlass 19:30, Filmbeginn 20:00.

FRANTA (R: Mathias Allary, 96 Min, DE, 1989)

OH BOY (R: Jan Ole Gerster, 95 Min, DE, 2012)

Im Kino der dffb zeigen wir, in Anwesenheit des Regisseurs, Jan Ole Gerster, OH BOY, seinen Debütfilm. Mit anschließender Diskussion. Einlass 19:30, Filmbeginn 20:00.
